The Tillie Ride is a complex event, involving hundreds of people, dollars, bikes and loads of enthusiasm. Maybe you’ve always wanted to launch a similar project, but didn’t know where to start.
Tillie Ride is my third large scale literacy project. My first, a big musical based on my picture book, Bessie Smith and the Night Riders, is chronicled in this short video documentary which can be viewed here: http://www.vimeo.com/8109490
I didn’t know anything about producing a musical (kinda like I don’t know anything about doing a long-distance bike ride), but it still turned out fabulous.
My second literacy effort–so dear to my heart–is my graphic novel Wireman. You can learn more about Wireman at http://www.wiremancomics.com
So I’ve learned a few things along the way. And I’m getting pretty wise. If you want to know all my tips for success, just go back to the front page and click on the category: Making Big Things Happen.
The most important thing to remember is, if you are called to do something wonderful, if it persistently comes back into your mind and you can’t get rid of it, you are probably meant to do it. So do it!
Don’t quit!
